Battotai Lyrics In English (Translation) - Japanese Army March

Battotai Lyrics from Japanese Army March

"Battōtai" (抜刀隊) is a Japanese gunka composed by Charles Leroux [ja] with lyrics by Toyama Masakazu [ja] in 1885. Upon the request of the Japanese government, Leroux adapted it along with another gunka, "Fusōka" (Song of Fusang), into the military march Rikugun bunretsu kōshinkyoku [ja] in 1912.

Battotai Lyrics English Translation

I am the government army, my enemy is
Unforgiving enemy of the morning
The enemy's general is
A hero like no other (twins)

The soldiers who follow him are
Together, a warrior of desperation
There is courage to be ashamed of a demon
heaven's unforgivable rebellion

The originator has long been
There is no such thing as a glorious example
Until the enemy's deceased husband (until then)
go ahead and go ahead

Take the Tamakiru Tsurugi with you
You should move forward with the intention of dying

Wind of the Empire (Mikuni) and Samurai (Mononofu)
The soul that protects itself
This time the Meiji Restoration has been destroyed
The modernity of Japanese swords (Yamatogatana)

Also, a tribute to the world
Both the enemy and the body
You should die under the fire
one who has the spirit of Yamato

The time to die is now
Don't be ashamed of being left behind
Until the enemy's deceased husband (until then)
go ahead and go ahead

Take the Tamakiru Tsurugi with you
You should move forward with the intention of dying
